How do I make Biodiesel?

- How to make biodiesel presentation by The S.A.V.E. Foundation

- Description and more links follow. Look for a more extensive Biodiesel tutorial by S.A.V.E. soon.

You can use raw vegetable oil. Raw oil like Canola, Olive, or the equivalent. You will need only two other ingredients. One, Methanol, two, Lye. Methanol and Lye are somewhat restricted. Methanol can be found at refineries. Lye can be found at chemical supply stores. FOLLOW ALL SAFETY PRECAUTIONS LABELED ON METHANOL AND LYE.

Proportions are 5:1 oil to methanol. Also, with RAW vegetable oil, use 3.5mg of lye to one liter of oil. If you can measure volume of lye, use 4.5mL volume of lye.

First, mix the methanol and lye till the lye crystals are dissolved.

Last, Mix the methanol, lye, and vegetable oil. Mix and shake for 15-30 minutes at room temperature. Let it sit for several hours. The more dense stuff on the bottom is glycerin; the stuff on top is biodiesel.

If you have pH paper, properly made biodiesel will have a pH between 8-9.

Due to current Meth Watch restrictions Lye is somewhat restricted. Chemical supply stores which make soap will be your best shot at acquiring lye. Please check back often for updates about this.

Methanol is a racing fuel additive and can be purchased or sought out through most automotive experts.

Insert here the handout from the Bioneers conference. There is a detailed and easy to follow description of a titration test.

How much Biodiesel has been sold in the US? How do the emissions compare to petroleum diesel? Can biodiesel help mitigate global warming? Does biodiesel cost more than other alternative fuels? Do I need special storage facilities? Can I use biodiesel in my existing diesel engine? Where can I purchase biodiesel?
